how to repair a model 3000 workrite wood welder

I have a model 3000 workrite wood welder that i bought 2 AUCTION it didn't work form day 1. when i plugged it in and pull the triger smoke came out of the unit , the smoke was emitting from a small tranformer. I'd like to fix this machine. but i don't wnt to spend a lot of money down the drain to do it, i've already spent $1200 for the machine.
